Please Kokua
Aloha from the Makapala Retreat Center (MRC),
We hope you and your ‘ohana are well as we all work to protect our communities in these remarkable times. Across the nation and here in Hawai’i, all community activities and gatherings have been placed at a standstill for the foreseeable future. This is being done in order to protect the health and wellbeing of our kupuna and ‘ohana. As we look ahead, we know we will need your help to sustain the facilities at MRC through the COVID-19 challenges.
We rely on group retreats and programs that pay to use the facilities to cover the cost of the basic utilities, upkeep, and maintenance of Makapala. However, many of the groups that were scheduled for the rest of year have cancelled due to the COVID-19 quarantine. The funds generated from these groups ensure that we are able to offer projects like Camp Lokahi, Kupuna Dinner, Makapala Archery Program, Makapala Wellness Workout, K2K Garden, cultural exchanges, and a community space. Today, our staff continue to find ways to support our community during the pandemic by delivering food, pharmacy/mail pick-ups for kupuna, and a new focus on the K2K community gardens.
The shutdown and loss of income has impacted MRC’s ability to continue to provide an often free and affordable place for community events, programs, and retreats for Kohala and Hawai’i, well after this crisis.
We believe that, with your partnership, we can see Makapala Retreat Center through this pandemic. Please join with us by donating to assist with our financial needs, so that when the time is right, we can safely re-open MRC and continue serving our community.
Mahalo, Makapala Staff
